Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States
Kamala Harris is the Vice President of the United States, serving as the first female, Black, and South Asian person in this role. She was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, to immigrant parents—her mother from India and her father from Jamaica. Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, beginning her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
She became the first Black woman to be elected as District Attorney of San Francisco in 2003, and later served as California’s Attorney General. In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate, representing California. Known for her advocacy on criminal justice reform, healthcare, and economic justice, she gained national attention for her pointed questioning during Senate hearings.
In 2020, she joined Joe Biden’s presidential ticket, and upon winning, made history as Vice President. Harris’s work focuses on issues like voting rights, immigration reform, climate action, and economic equity. She continues to shape her role as a trailblazer in U.S. politics, advocating for policies aimed at broadening opportunity and equality across the nation.
